Field Trip: Mexico

Janaki, Pascal and Lola went on what Janaki described as the best trip of her life. But she didn't have to say a word for me to know it. How she felt was obvious from the smile on her face , as she stood in the middle of piles on top of piles of wool goods in her living room.

About a month ago Janaki was tipped off about a town in the central mountainous region of Mexico, which specialized in the manufacturing of various wool items. It took all but two weeks for her to plan the trip out there to see the wool promised land for herself. On the trip, the whole family were treated to a once in a life time experience getting to visit the shops and meet artisans behind the products. A, curiously, male driven industry Janaki discovered.

The most depressing part of Janaki's trip was finding out how close to extinction the trade is becoming; fifty years ago at 5 O'clock in the morning the town would be buzzing with a symphony of looms. At the time of their visit, there were only nine people keeping the traditional wool making alive. This largely because the work on 100 year old colonial looms is labour intensive and competing fabrics imported from China are now widely available at significantly lower prices. The material and craft, Janaki tells me "are not respected"; "It'll comeback" quickly added an optimistic Pascal. In some cases, Marché St. George bought out an entire years worth of production from certain artisans whose methods take an entire week to produce a single garment.

This field trip to Mexico was undeniably one of the most eye opening voyages the Larsen/Roy has been on, and they have not come back empty handed. A plethora of goods from a small and dying industry are now available in Vancouver at our shop. Unfortunately, some of the items, for aforementioned reasons, come in an extremely limited supply.

Press: The New York Times

The whole team is absolutely honored about the Marché St. George mention in the New York Times's travel section. It is an incredible feeling to be recognized by a world renowned publication. We would like to extended a sincere thank you to NYT writer, Bonny Makarewicz, for including us in her article. If you haven't seen our feature, you can find it here.

Halloween at Marché St. George (2011)

On Halloween, Marche turns into the spookiest of shops, then again not really. Unless by spooky you mean adorable; Lola and Janaki stole my heart this year with their lion tamer and furious pink wildcat costumes. They were so cute together, but it almost didn't happen. At first, Lola was hesitant to put on her costume, but warmed up to the idea later on. I'm glad it all worked out. Everyone did a terrific job of celebrating the night from decorations to costumes. I was really happy with the selection of candy they had all my favourites, including Salt Water Taffy.

Backyard Honey

This is probably one of our most exciting and personal offerings of the season. As you may have noticed, Le Marché St. George houses a few hives (behind our garage). Mellissa Cartwright of Backyard Buzz has dropped off the first batch of honey from our very own hives. Each batch has a color and flavour unique to its area of cultivation; ours, for example, has a beautiful floral finish. Unfortunately, there is a limited quantity and they are going extremely fast, so move with haste if you don't want to miss out ($15.00 a pint).

Thanksgiving Dinner at Marché St. George (2011)

On this evening we were thankful for all the delicious food and wonderful people we were able to share it with. The shop was transformed into a beautiful dining area for our thanksgiving celebration. Everyone ate and drank the night away with smiles on their faces. In other words, it was the perfect example of what a gathering amongst friends and family should be.

20 Mule Team® Borax

It felt, at least for awhile, like I kept adding cleaner after cleaners to my home, and the space beneath my kitchen sink is a testament to this, enter 20 Mule Team® Borax . This product can be used in endless ways, including for laundry, deodorizing, disinfecting, multipurpose cleaning and much much more. Heather O'Hara Levesque of Turning Green Saving Green has a very informative post about Borax on her site. Bottom line is this, if you are sick or the piling and hurtful cleaners around your home, inform your self about this great product. And oh yes, you can purchase it at Le Marché St. George ($7.50).
