Pestemal Turkish Towels

Le Marché St. George is now offering hand-loomed Pestemal Turkish Towels imported directly from Istanbul (Turkey). These beautiful towels are made traditionally on a turkish loom, some with organic cotton, while others have been washed in olive oil soap making them softer to the touch and wonderfully fragrant. The ladies of the neighbourhood have been donning them as makeshift shawls and look brilliant. They are versatile, attractive and we guarantee you will fall in love as we have.

VanValley Food Connection

Since July, every Thursday we have had the pleasure of watching people picking up their seasonal produce from Van Valley Food Connection. Their service is truly a marvel, and the countless smiles on peoples' faces, as they take their weekly goods home, is testament to it. One of the most exciting things about VanValley Food Connection is the special offer they have for their patrons every week. This week it meant two-dollar bags of basil or on-the-vine tomatoes, or seven-dollar garlic scape salt from Parsons Farm Market (which we carry in-store!). The scrumptious peaches were complimentary to every customer. We highly recommend you talk to the educated, helpful and polite staff about their service, so you can join in on the fun next season.

Summer Tarts

I love summer. I love eating outside, the long rambling evenings and the abundance of beautiful produce and fruit. This is a simple plum, blueberry and lavender tart that I made for the shop yesterday. Next is one made with yellow plums from Saltspring Island. The great thing about tarts is that they are quick to make and are good with just about anything thrown in them.

Noble Tonics

I'm in absolute love with this packaging, the Noble line consists of two aged maple syrups and three vinegars. I had a little taste of the the Tahitian Vanilla Bean and Egyptian Chamomile matured Maple Syrup and poured over ice-cream would be a killer combo. I'm scared to try the Tuthilltown Bourbon Maple Syrup because there will be no turning back.

“Noble” is the result of collaboration with a small-batch boutique whiskey distillery in NY, an artisan vinegar maker in WA, and rare spice producer in Europe, and a small batch Canadian Maple Syrup outfit.

The beautiful packaging combined with their unique, delicious contents makes a great gift or a perfect treat to mix things up.

Aged Black Garlic

We just received black garlic at the shop. Black garlic is white garlic that has been specially aged through heat and time. The garlic becomes black, very soft and sweet. The taste and texture will remind you of figs and molasses with a background flavour of sweet garlic. By aging garlic it doubles its antioxidant properties and removes the odour of regular garlic.

Recipe Ideas

Balsamic Roasted Onions by Michelle Huisman

One of my favourite things about the shop is when people come back and tell me about the meals they have made using products that they bought at Le Marché St. George. I started asking people to send me a quick photo and a list of ingredients.

Carleigh sent me these three amazing dishes that she made using products from Le Marché and things in her pantry. Don't feel shy to share your recipe ideas and creations to info@marchestgeorge.com.

"Even though the weather is getting warmer, I couldn't resist the combination of the sweet split peas and the salty duck procuitto. I removed the skin and rendered it nice and crispy first, so that everything would have a tasty beginning, and then the decadent cubes of procuitto were tossed in at the last minute to keep them tender."

"Here is what I made tonight for dinner, using your wonderful Polderside duck chorizo, tinned whole cherry tomatoes, and black beans. In addition I used corn penne, fire roasted corn, garlic chips, and some baby kale, and kale flowers."

"This is my latest brunch appetizer favourite! The pie dough is a cheddar cheese pie dough using Birchwood Dairy's Sharp Cheddar, the filling is the Polderside Duck Breakfast Sausage, and the dipping sauce is Yuzu Marmalade."

Thanks again Carleigh for sharing!
