Mellifera Bees' Honey

Local beekeeper Melissa Cartwright, who set up a stationary beehive in the back yard of our shop, has sent us our long-awaited shipment of her decadent honey. Yes, ladies and gents, that means Mellifera Bees is back on our shelves, and with fresh new packaging that we think is quite beautiful. Using last year's events as a guideline, we recommend that those who are interested in getting your hands on Melissa's honey for your home or as gifts should come in sooner rather than later.

farmersdotter organics

Cawston, BC's farmersdotter organics, founded by Yvonne and Morris Holmes of Parsons Farm Market, have recently equipped their farm with a commercial kitchen. Exciting news, so they've taken over the top-to-bottom manufacturing of their lovely artisanal product line, including their garlic scape salt, and cherries with anise, pictured above, which are a perfect topping for your morning yogurt. These and many other items of theirs are now available in-store. Also, if you happen to find yourself at the Burnaby Farmer's Market on Saturdays or Ladner Farmer's Market on Sundays, drop by and say hello!

PS: I heard they are now starting to make their own line of delicious baked goods that are definitely worth a try!

Event Coverage: Sitting 'N Eating

When the right people become involved in a fitting project together, you feel a certain confidence breathing into their creation. What Tyler and his group were able to provide a very lucky party of individuals with was elegant, rustic, and wonderfully charming. Guests were treated to a one-night-only experience that included a rich and textural atmosphere conjured up by Tyler, his fiancé Lucinda, and Janaki Larsen. The venue was absolutely stunning. Locally-sourced foliage, an impressive collection of antiquated pieces, and the undeniably impressive space above Marche melded together exceptionally.

I arrived just in time to see delicious canapés and wine being consumed by happy guests. Moments after, everyone sat down to listen to the illustrious Dr. John Friesen, who opened up his solo cello set with Bach's Suite No. 1 for Cello. I must admit that unfortunately, my knowledge of classical compositions does not run deep, but like many, I know and love this piece. After playing, Dr. Friesen explained that the music had been written specifically for his instrument. The performance was unpretentiously intimate (at one point, Dr. Friessen joked about not remembering the last time he played where the chance of his bow hitting someone in the crowd around him was a real possibility), and his concert was a nourishing memory that will always remain with me. After the first piece, I knew that this must be one of those evenings that should play out with as little intrusion as possible. After capturing what was needed, I departed shortly after the first course, graciously provided by guest Chef Andrea Carlson.

The pictures above are my humble look into what was a hugely successful event. At one point Pascal, Janaki, and Lola ran across the street to hear the sound of people enjoying themselves. I learned that this is a regular practice for Janaki. She told me that the sound is incredibly rewarding, after all the thought and hard work that goes into planning a night like this.

I would love to thank everyone involved for their generosity, and for allowing me to document their brilliant event.

Okanagan Fair Flowers: Posies wth Messages

Zafder of Okanagan Fair Flowers has continuously been gathering posies with messages for us over the summer, and we wanted to show his creations a little love on our blog. They would be right at home, placed inside your favourite cup or a small pot, to add a personal touch to living or working spaces.

The posie bundle above also contains marjoram, lavender, and a fragrant, ornamental Kent Beauty oregano, lending it a message of friendship, love and health.

Stop by Marché to pick one up for yourself, a friend or loved one; they are a perfect token of appreciation.

Sitting 'N Eating (August 4, 2012)

The idea of Tyler Gray (from Mikuni Wild Harvest) hosting dinner events at Le Marché St. George is something that we have been very excited and hopeful about. Now that such an occasion is on its way, we are thrilled to spread the word about what will be one of the most charming events to be hosted on our grounds. As stated in the poster above, please email Tyler Gray at tylerg@mikuniwildharvest.com with any inquiries about the dinner. A limited number of seats are available. For a closer glance, you may also enlarge the event's poster info by clicking on it.

Hope to see you there!

Event Coverage: VNB Pop-Up

Last October, when Virginie and Bastien first moved to Vancouver, they were temporarily situated in a little place that was just a stone's throw away from our shop. Despite moving away from the neighborhood, their friendship with Le Marché St. George continued, and eventually lead to this new event series: the VNB pop-up photo booth and darkroom. After a successful trial at this year's Make It! fair, they decided to try their setup on our lawn. With Pascal being from Quebec, and Virginie and Bastien hailing from France, Bastille Day was the perfect occasion to kick off what will hopefully be one of many collaborations between us.

Virginie described what they were doing as a twist on calotype photography, the idea being to expose the shot onto a paper negative, and contact print it to get the positive image; in the end patrons receive two shots, the positive version as well as the negative version, which they will frame for customers. This works in such a way that people could also shoot portraits of themselves after the focus has been set up. With the portrait option, people would snap their images and come back around 15 minutes later to pick up their shot, or if people chose the workshop option, they would go into the darkroom and process their shot.

A special thanks goes out to Melissa, our new cook in the kitchen who whips up delicious sandwiches and other treats, for volunteering to be the first participant of the day.

You can catch round two of VNB's photo booth at Marché this coming Saturday, July 21st, 2012.
