Event Coverage: Butter on the Endive

Butter On The Endive is an incredible team, and they perfectly executed their first Chef In Residence pop-up restaurant night in the live @ Marché space. Not knowing any of the people on their end, I was a little apprehensive to go upstairs and take photos, concerned that I might be an annoyance, but figured that orders from Janaki might get me a long way.

In the end, I was afraid of nothing, as Owen Lightly of BOTE and Adam Chandler of Beta 5 Chocolates were incredibly hospitable. After asking politely if I may poke my camera around their workspace, not only was I granted permission, but they seemed delighted by the idea. Walking into the main dining hall, I spotted a friendly face in Michelle Sproule of Scout Magazine, who welcomed me with a hug. I couldn't have felt more at home. What I didn't expect was for her to invite me to nibble from her plates. Suddenly, I was drinking wine with friends and sampling Yarrow Meadows duck breast with turnip mostarda, fava beans, and natural jus.

I dipped in and out of their event, travelling between their service and Seth Apter's book signing downstairs. A regular day again turned into a meaningful memory. Sometimes it feels like Marché is the gathering point for all of the amazing and talented people that Vancouver and the world over has to offer. I am so humbled to have been granted the immense privilege of documenting and sharing it all with you.

Event Coverage: Book signing with Seth Apter

Marché hosted its first book signing event with our dear friend, Seth Apter.

His book, The Pulse of Mixed Media, is a very interesting body of work that examines the minds of 100 artists in an unpretentious and whimsical manner. The questions asked are unorthodox, and every artist's response is unique and inspired. The signing was the definition of an intimate gathering, as many of the attendees have been followers of Seth's work for a long time. Admirers greeted him, yet the interactions between everyone flowed candidly.

Wine, aromatic cheeses, a medley of chorizo, and fresh baguettes were the perfect treats for all of our guests. The event, at its heart, resembled a relaxed gathering of friends. The heartfelt speech about Janaki's mom, Patricia Larsen, was endearing and perfectly timed, with Mother's Day quickly heading our way. Thank you to everyone who attended, for making this event a success!

On this night, we also discovered that Marche will now be serving ice cream from Birchwood Dairy in Abbotsford. They gave me a sample cone, and I must say that we are all in for a treat this summer!

Scout Magazine & Le Marche St. George Present: An Intimate Italian Supper This Sunday Evening

Event Coverage: Creanza Olive Oil tasting & Puglian Dinner

Let me start by saying that this was undoubtedly one of the most magical occasions that I've ever been a part of. It's hard to even describe. The Larsen women (Patricia, Janaki, and Klee) really know how to make dreams come to life. Our dear friend Tonio Creanza, his wife, and his family, who we have been supportive of since we opened (there are two detailed interviews on our blog about Tonio, his olive oil, and his wonderful company, Messors, which you can read about here and here) brought their own flavour that was perfectly in sync with the aura that Le Marché St. George is known for.

The evening started with an educational olive oil tasting where guests were invited to sample Tonio's olive oil and enjoyed an intimate musical performance from Mr. Creaza himself. This was my first time seeing him perform and it was something completely honest. Tonio was in his element. The lush sound of his voice and guitar filled the room with warmth and charm. Meanwhile, the backyard of Le Marché was being transformed into a dining area that was a work of art in itself, to be enjoyed by its company, who transcended beyond its own beauty, as it was the people, from babies to grandmothers, who gave the setting its heart.

After a short intermission to prepare dinner, guests started pouring in and filling up empty seats. They chatted away with their friends and strangers while sampling various appetizers set at their table and sipping wine from freshly opened bottles. In what seemed like moments, the pasta was served. The orchestra of oohs and aahs was short-lived as people enjoyed their first bites. Two pasta dishes were joined by an abundance of Parmigiano-Reggiano, fresh basil, salads of fennel, fruit, and roasted bell peppers, olive oil, and bread.

Everyone left with a smile and the gratifying feeling that can only be delivered by a wonderful meal.

For those of you who missed the chance to attend, we are currently planning a second evening and will shortly be making an announcement through our site and social media.

Coming Soon: French Onion Soup

We're excited to announce that French onion soup will be debuting on our menu very soon. Janaki has undeniably served me some of the best meals of my life, so when she offered to let me taste her latest dish, of course I said yes! French onion soup is a classic comfort food that perfectly fits our shop. The mouthwatering broth made with organic onions, and topped off with crisp baguette, a touch of fresh thyme, and a generous amount of melted Gruyère, is sure to bring smiles to many faces.

May 3rd: The Pulse of Mixed Media book signing w/ author Seth Apter

About the book

Listen closely…can you hear it?

Can you hear the voices? Thoughts, insights, confessions from the creative community sharing ideas, trading secrets, venting frustrations; asking and answering questions such as, "What color rarely shows up in your work?" or "How do you express vulnerability in you art?" Or "What is one current trend that you wish would go away?" As artists, we are curious by nature and there is a longing to see inside the hearts and minds of artistic souls of our own kind. That is the beat of our lives—the Pulse of Mixed Media!

In this book—a complex survey of artists around the globe—there is much for you to discover:

• Visual insights: Many questions are answered not only in words, but often through visual art, and include self-portraits from 31 spotlight artists such as Pam Carriker, Danny Gregory and Judy Wise.
•A diverse sampling of provocative questions: Over 100 artists share their thoughts on everything from color, media and tools, to emotions, secrets and self-revelations
•Insightful sidebar statistics: Data from thousands of participants collected through polls on the author's blog reveal a remarkable analysis of the creative community at large

Picker Shack Apple Juice

We are very proud to have such a wonderful product newly available at our shop. Apple juice shouldn't be too complicated. You take some apples and extract the juice from them. It's a simple process that somehow ended up getting out of hand. However, Scott Hawthorn, like ourselves, shares this philosophy and makes apple juice with one ingredient: apples. Scott is a well known restaurateur in Vancouver with ties to Salt Tasting Room, Judas Goat and Bitter Tasting Room. The apples for the juice are from his orchard, Picker Shack in Naramata, British Columbia. The product really speaks for itself. It has a very clean and fresh flavour profile. We have a sample box set up in the store for those of you curious enough to come by and try some. It's truly the best apple juice I've ever tasted!
